Summary:

ATLAS Partnership, a 501(c)(3) theatre-focused historical society and producing entity, is seeking a contract graphic designer/illustrator to create promotional images and print materials for the Professional Premiere of Gabriel, a soaring new musical by Jerold Solomon, Foster Solomon, and Ron Klipp.

Gabriel tells the story of Gabriel’s Rebellion, one of the most important slave uprisings in Virginia and American history. Born into slavery in 1776, Gabriel became a powerful force for justice and social conscience. His vision to liberate over 370,000+ enslaved Virginians embodied the revolutionary spirit, and in 1800, Gabriel risked—and ultimately sacrificed—his life for freedom.

This story and consequently, this production, are deeply rooted in Black history and experience, an essential part of America’s origin story that extends beyond the commonly told narratives of the Revolutionary War. As such, ATLAS Partnership is committed to ensuring authentic representation and storytelling across all aspects of the project. We strongly encourage applications from Black designers, other designers of color, as well as individuals from historically underrepresented backgrounds.

While Gabriel is our current graphic design priority, we are looking for a designer who may be interested in collaborating with us on additional and/or future projects.

Role & Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with creative team and producers to design a visual identity that reflects the historical significance, themes and storytelling of Gabriel.

  • Accordingly, design digital and print materials including posters, postcards, flyers, playbills, social media graphics, etc.

  • Ensure that designs align with ATLAS Partnership's existing branding and visual identity.

  • Deliver final assets in a timely manner, meeting production deadlines.

  • Potential to work on additional ATLAS Partnership projects beyond Gabriel.

Qualifications:

  • Strong portfolio showcasing expertise in graphic design and preferably illustration.

  • Experience designing for theatre, arts, or cultural projects preferred.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team while bringing a unique creative voice.

  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign).

Compensation and Timeline:

  • Applicants should include rate expectations in their application. Compensation will be discussed based on skillset and project scope, with the option for an hourly or project-based rate.

  • Contracted, project-based work (1099 independent contractor status).

  • Payments will be structured based on milestones or project completion.

  • Work will begin in March 2025 and continue until the show opens in September 2025.

  • Opportunity to modify and/or extend contract to include other ATLAS Partnership design projects.
